Street Workout first appeared in Brooklyn, New York, where Afro-American groups competed in agility and strength using the street furniture of their immediate surroundings, public spaces such as parks and squares, like a proper gym. They soon formed organised groups like the Ruff Ryders or Bartendaz, who have furthered their international reputation through social networks. The Mula community also caters for this form of urban expression, as represented by Barbarrio. In the words of Barbarrio members Alba, Leo and Yamal, ‘Sacrifice and self-improvement, respect and mutual support’ are the keys.
