Thanks to the sponsorship of MasterCard, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza will open on Mondays, free of charge, as from 21 January next. Between noon and 4.00 p.m. visitors will be able to enjoy the museum’s two permanent displays, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Carmen Thyssen collections, as well as the bookshop, gift shop and cafeteria. This agreement, in force for three years, is an old aspiration of the museum’s and complements a similar initiative launched by the neighbouring Prado Museum last year.

MasterCard Mondays is presented now that the numbers of visitors to Spanish museums have been made public, proving that the Thyssen has been one of the most visited cultural centres in 2012, with 1255,881 tickets sold, an increase of 17.3% with respect to the previous year. This initiative isn’t only intended to make the collections more accessible to the general public, but also to strengthen alliances between private companies and public cultural organisations, a practice not too frequent in Spain.
